"Know Thyself" (Gnothi Seauton in Ancient Greek) was a
maxim inscribed at the entrance of the Temple of Apollo in ancient Delphi, a
site of a famous oracle. It was a command for those who sought divine counsel
to understand their own human limitations and place in the world, rather than
simply focusing on external answers. The inscription served as a reminder that
true wisdom begins with self-knowledge before, during, or after consulting the
oracle.
