Ellen's Lesson to Share: Know Thyself, as inscribed in the Oracle of Delphi

 

"Know Thyself" (Gnothi Seauton in Ancient Greek) was a maxim inscribed at the entrance of the Temple of Apollo in ancient Delphi, a site of a famous oracle. It was a command for those who sought divine counsel to understand their own human limitations and place in the world, rather than simply focusing on external answers. The inscription served as a reminder that true wisdom begins with self-knowledge before, during, or after consulting the oracle.

I Am On Strike For Palestine

 

Dear students,

I am on strike today against the genocide and apartheid of the Palestinian people. Therefore, our bookclub is pushed back for next Monday, October 20th.

Nevertheless, I will be at the school from 5pm on to raise awareness of the situation of the Palestinian people right now, and what we can do about it. For everybody that would like to swing by, you´ll find me at the entrance stairs.

Our First Bookclub Session on October 15th: I Miss You When I Blink, by Mary Laura Philpott

                                                

Mary Laura Philpott thought she’d cracked the code: Always be right, and you’ll always be happy.

But once she'd completed her life's to-do-list (job, spouse, house, babies -check!), she found that instead of feeling content and successfil, she felt anxious. Lost. Stuck in a dailygrind of overflowing calendars, grueling small talk, and sprawling traffic. She'd done everything "right", but she felt all wrong, What's the worse failure, she wondered: smiling and staying the course, or blowing it all up and running away? And are those the only options?

In this memoir-in-essays, full of spot-on observations about home, work, and creative life, Philpott takes on the conflicting pressures of modern adulthood with wit and heart.
